Technology Trends for 2006

I just came across an interesting article about technology and the trends we should see developing. One thing that I thought was interesting in the article was the research about where consumers shop (or plan to shop) for the holidays. Of course, this is in regards to technology - not toys - but, some toys have everything to do with technology. Here is what the research of Ipsos Insight showed:

Traffic Alerts for Top Tech Retailers

Consumers are looking to save, too, with most intending to visit more than one store for their holiday electronics. Nearly half of all respondents intend to shop at Best Buy (48%) or Wal-Mart (45%). Shoppers intend to visit Circuit City (32%), Target (26%), Sears (20%), and Costco (14%) too. Higher income households are gravitating toward Best Buy (60%) or Circuit City (40%) and lower income households are counting on Wal-Mart (65%).

Office supply stores Office Depot (11%), Office Max (10%), and Staples (2%) are some consumers’ intended destinations, while others hope to avoid the malls by purchasing electronics from Amazon (10%) or eBay (9%). 

Why is this info so interesting? Let’s just say - if you are shopping for resale, do you want to shop where the crowds are?

Walmart’s Big Layaway Announcement

Yesterday, Walmart announced plans to phase out their layaway program… I have a feeling this is going to effect Christmas toy sales on ebay. I know that many toy sellers use Walmarts layaway program to hold items they think will be hot sellers - then, when the time comes to sell them on ebay, if they decide the items aren’t going to be profitable for them, they don’t buy them.

What Ebay Thinks Will Be Hot…

Ebay has a list of items they think will be hot for the holidays this year… I’m not too sure I agree - it seems their information is based on trends from this past year. Only Ebay Knows…

Selling on ebay always involves risk. Of course, there are things we can do to increase exposure of our auctions (check out my free e-course on this subject). But, how can we better know what is going to sell for the best profit?

I always turn to ebay for this answer… anyone can make predictions – but, only ebay will tell us what is worth buying for resale. One of the best ways to know what toys are selling well on ebay is RESEARCH! But, let’s get real… who has the time to research auctions if they are so busy shopping, taking pictures, listing and shipping? And, to make it even more difficult, to *really* be able to know what is selling well, this research must be done on an ongoing basis. Spending a week researching hot toys is great – but, the results of that research can’t always be applied to next month. Ebay is constantly changing… and although toys are always great items to sell for profit, it isn’t always the same toys that bring in the dough.
